I often sing in Spanish at performances and I get variety of responses such as: ”Why are you singing in Spanish? Nobody speaks Spanish.” or the opposite response: I LOVE when you sing in Spanish, can you please sing more songs in Spanish?
Recently I got a response from a Mexican/American saying (in Spanish) ”It makes me feel like somebody is on our side; and it makes me really proud.”
And at last night’s gig at the Bywater, a Mexican/American approached me and said that he had just relocated his Mexican father to Asheville who was there at the gig. He said it made he and his father so happy to hear our Hispanic vibe and that it made his father, a retired Mariachi, feel welcome in Asheville.
So, to answer the repeated question of WHY I sing in Spanish and English: It connects and celebrates two cultures who can mutually learn and benefit from one another.
And it’s fun!

You slippery little fish you! I would have loved to see you serenade in Spanish at the Bywater. Next time?

Mucho me gusto, Miriam! Your singing in Spanish has been such an inspiration for me, and it just plain SOUNDS so beautiful. I love to listen to you and see if I can pick up a new word or two
